Are Plastic Bottles Harmful to Our Health?
Last Updated: May 19, 2007
Plastic Water Bottle We've all heard that plastic bottles are a problem for the environment. It's estimated that 88% of plastic bottles are not being recycled. Canadians alone sent 65,000 tonnes of plastic bottles to landfills or incinerators in 2002. The production of plastic bottles also generates a significant amount of air pollution.

Research also suggests that plastic bottles may be harmful to our health. Antimony, a toxic chemical used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, can leach into the liquid being stored in the bottle over time. Antimony is a white metallic element that in small doses can cause nausea, dizziness, and depression. In large doses, it can be fatal.

Lawsuits have already been filed against manufacturers of baby bottles containing bisphenol-A (BPA), a toxin found in hard plastics. BPA is linked to early-onset puberty, declining sperm counts, and the huge increase in breast and prostate cancer.

With the environmental issues and potential health risks of plastic bottles, we should consider using an alternative, such as stainless steel, glass, or ceramics. When you do need to use plastic bottles, don't store the liquids for extended periods of time, as there will be more potential for toxins to leach into the liquid.

Help to remove toxins,
thus reducing your
kidneys workload.
